If you are joining us for Part 2 of Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que, welcome back! If you stumbled upon this post before reading our Kansas City BBQ Tour Preview, you may want to do that first – but you should also make sure to read Part 1 of Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que before proceeding.

(Continued from yesterday)

With our tour complete, and our questions answered about what makes Joe’s different than the other BBQ restaurants in KC, we were ready to finally try the BBQ that we had been smelling since we pulled in the parking lot an hour earlier. As you can imagine, since a line was forming before Joe’s even opened, there was a line out the door (literally) an hour into the lunch rush.

We made our way back to the end of the line, which was in the parking lot, and began thinking about what we wanted to order. Selecting what we wanted to order was extremely easy – we wanted one of everything. Since we obviously couldn’t do that, we chose Items which were similar to items that we had at the other restaurants. As we were discussing what we were actually going to order when it was our turn at the counter, a local informed us that Joe’s just doesn’t do the BBQ right, but that they have the best French fries in Kansas City – we of course added an order of fries to our list.

After placing our order, and searching the dining area for a place to sit (this place gets packed), we took our trays (yes there were more than one) of prized BBQ to our seats. For our final BBQ meal in Kansas City, we enjoyed: Burnt Ends, Pulled Pork, Red Beans and Rice, Ribs, BBQ Beans, French Fries (aka the best fries in Kansas City), and Texas Toast.

I could go on forever about how great the food was at Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que, but in the effort of not making this post any longer than it already is, I’ll just hit on some of the high points. When you bite into this BBQ, the first thing you notice is how perfectly everything is smoked. With each bite you get to know the distinctive smoky flavor of the Missouri White Oak a little bit better, and after just a few bites you realize that this is real BBQ.

Everything that we tried at Joe’s was done perfectly, nothing was dry, and there was no over powering smoke flavor that you might experience at a lesser quality BBQ establishment. The flavor was a balance between the natural flavors of the meat, combined with the right exposure to the sweet smoke from the Missouri White Oak embers. Quite literally what topped off our BBQ experience was the sauce. There were two that we tried – the original and then the spicy version. The original was the perfect complement to everything that we ordered, including the fries.

One thing we set out to do on our BBQ tour was to bring back some helpful information for those who are interested in visiting KC to check out the BBQ scene. As part of that process, we don’t want to necessarily rank the restaurants that we visited, but we do want to recommend certain items for each particular restaurant. My personal recommendation would be to order the burnt ends at Joe’s, the burnt ends here were so tender, juicy and flavorful, that it would be a shame to go all the way there and not try the burnt ends. The other comment that I would make is that if you just happen to be passing through KC quickly, and need to get your BBQ fix with one stop – Joe’s would be the stop for you. Joe’s will leave you feeling like you satisfied your BBQ craving, and will probably make you feel like you want to plan another trip back to KC to do a little BBQ tour of your own.

There truly is no way to describe how amazing this BBQ is, so I guess you’ll just have to plan a road trip to Kansas City to see what Joe’s Kansas City BBQ is all about – just make sure to let them know that Food n’ Focus sent you!
